About the novel...

The Phantom Tollbooth was written by Norton Juster and illustrated by Jules Feiffer, this children's novel was published in 1961. Tollbooth has been compared to such equally colour and exciting works as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll.

The main character is Milo, who is a bored boy who arrives home one day to find a gift waiting for him. He sets up the gift and it is a tollbooth complete with signs and coins for the fare. He travels to the Kingdom of Wisdom and when he doesn't pay attention to where he is going, Milo ends up in the Doldrums where thinking is prohibited. It is there where he meets Tock, a watchdog. Together, the pair travel to Dictionopolis where letters are grown on trees and sold in a marketplace.
